High Dose Vitamin C IV Therapy

High Dose Vitamin C IV Therapy

Vitamin C (ascorbate) is a reducing agent, which means that it donates its electrons.  This is a critical requirement of biology. Molecules that are electron deficient, that is they have lost an electron they cause problems.

These electron deficient molecules are called, free radicals and are responsible for all the damage done to cells resulting in everything from arthritis to cancer. Under these circumstances of donating electrons to a free radical, vitamin C is functioning as an anti-oxidant and the free radical is then said to be in an oxidized state.

This process of donating electrons can result in the opposite effect when those electrons are donated to certain metals, like copper and iron that are abundant in the blood and tissues. It is helpful and necessary for the vitamin C to participate in this case by producing free radicals.

In fact, it is this process, Fenton reaction, that is responsible for the production of many essential molecules and other substances like hormones and adrenaline. Under these circumstances when the vitamin C donates electrons to a metal, an oxidized by-product or free radical is formed that is necessary to carry out a specific function. For example, when this occurs in white blood cells as they encounter a microorganism, like a bacteria, the power of the free radical is used to eliminate the organism.

Oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions are important because they are the principal sources of energy on this planet, natural, biological and artificial. Oxidation of molecules by removal of hydrogen (electron) or combination with oxygen normally liberates large quantities of energy.

Inside every cell are many organelles called mitochondria that perform the function of combining oxygen with glucose to produce energy in the form of ATP, which is currency of energy in all biological systems.  Every enzyme requires ATP in order to do its work, and lots of it.

In the mitochondria, Glucose is oxidized to CO2 (carbon dioxide) and oxygen is reduced to H20 (water) while ATP is produced full of energy that is acquired during this process called, oxidative phosphorylation, OXPHOS for short. When oxygen is used during this process, many free radicals are formed called super oxide and  hydrogen peroxide but are quickly neutralized with enzymes called, super oxide dismutase and catalase and peroxidases.

When a cell loses approximately 60% of its’ mitochondria, it needs to use a primitive process for producing energy called fermentation. That signals the nucleus to modify the cell’s genetic expression so many different genes are turned off and many other genes are turned on.

The genes that are turned on to support fermentation are called, oncogenes. Oncogenes are the consequence of a metabolic requirement, not the cause of cancer.

Both catalase and super oxide dismutase are down regulated, meaning that the cell no longer makes these enzymes in large quantities since there are not many mitochondria left and therefore not so many oxidative by-products such as super oxide and hydrogen peroxide. The benefit of vitamin C is that it reduces copper and iron (Fenton reaction) in all of the tissues in the body that have these metals and cancer cells have a lot of both since iron is necessary for the cells to live and grow and copper is necessary to make new blood vessels (angiogenesis).

So, the Fenton reaction produces lots of hydrogen peroxide however, since the cancer cells do not have catalase, they cannot neutralize it so they are oxidized and die whereas the healthy cells have lots of catalase and easily neutralize the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
